A Little Bit of History

Gyrocopters have been in operation since the early 1920s and have been successfully deployed in many different applications including surveillance and security during their development.

They were extensively used by the US Postal Service during the 1930s and were deployed by many combatant armies in WWII mainly in “under the radar” combat activities in seek and identify missions. The gyrocopter's short take-off and landing, low maintenance and low cost rendered them almost a disposable asset particularly in artillery, troop and armaments spotting.

Small in size, but big on safety

The unique feature of a gyrocopter is its inherent safety. Even with a total engine failure the gyrocopter glides gently to earth due to the auto rotor system. The rotor provides vertical movement when air passes across the blades.

Although there is normally a pre-rotor system to facilitate short take-off, the gyroplane uses an unpowered rotor in free autorotation to develop lift. While similar to a helicopter rotor in appearance, the autogyro's unpowered rotor must have air flowing upward across it to make it rotate. Thus, if the gyrocopter’s engine fails, the air draft over the rotor will allow the aircraft to descend gradually and calmly back to land even in crosswinds of up to 40 knots.

Forward thrust is provided independently, by an engine-driven propeller whether the land based or amphibious model.

Multiple uses, but here are just a few

In security operations, gyrocopters can swarm an area giving massive surveillance coverage, from both low and high altitudes, and can be equipped with a variety of support equipment including day and night vision cameras, lasers, and armaments.

For asset monitoring, single units or teams can be used to inspect oil and gas pipelines, electricity power lines and pylons, roads, etc, every day or multiple times per day very economically.

In health delivery, the applications are never ending from emergency and accident response to medical supply distribution, daily and/or urgent personnel movements, epidemic and disease monitoring and control.

Further applications include, but are by no means limited to, agricultural crop endeavours, livestock control and monitoring, wetlands and rivers administration, remote outstation support, wildlife and game park observation, fisheries support, timber and forest programmes, geological surveys, mapping etc.

And, there is the leisure and support sectors. Guided tours, joy rides, home and away area observation, fast and efficient transport to meetings, marriages, funerals and a wide range of business and domestic needs, including avoiding traffic jams (3rd mainland bridge or Lagos-Ibadan expressway on a Sunday morning).

When you already have a luxury sports car

Finally, the “Toys for Boys” sector. Park the Lambo, McLaren, Bugatti or Ferrari, and jump into the gyro to get where you want to go fast and in the ultimate style.

Your toys are not complete without a gyro, but do not get caught in a cheap alternative to an AGE Aviation Gyro.
